Photo GalleryMegan Burgess reports on some events at Emporia State University:
The first photo is of the Kansas Speaker of the House, Doug Mays. Youth04 invited him (3rd week of Sept.) and another Kansas House Representative, Mike Burgess, (who is pictured in picture number 2) to speak on the importance of being civically engaged, voting, having a voice in politics, and how politicians do care and want to hear from their constituents. They did a great job. That sparked conversations in the classes in the next few class periods after theyspoke. Some of the students even quoted the speakers weeks after, so we do know that the students were paying attention!
The third picture is of Lynn Jenkins, Kansas State Treasurer, speaking to the Oct. 7th event that Youth04 cosponsored. She had a inspiring speech to get the crowd involved before the next speaker.
The fourth and fifth photographs are of Ron Thornburgh, Kansas's Secretary of State. He had an amazing speech on the people who have fought and died for our country to give us the right to vote and be free. He received a standing ovation!
The last photo is of the Attorney General of Kansas, Phill Kline. He had a fiery speech on the movements that certain groups had to take, African Americans, women, etc., to get the right to vote. He also was taunting on the same things like Ron on how citizens today need to be more involved in the political process, be more civically engaged, vote, speak out and find a passion to get involved. Phill also opened the floor after his speech for question and answer segment. It was wonderful. Students had powerful and very serious questions, and Phill answered them very fluently. |
