2003 Democracy Day

Post from Senator Joseph Lieberman, January 7, 2004

Clearly jobs are of great importance to young people. Do you think that this concern is being addressed by presidential candidates, the current administration, and other politicians? Do you think that 18-25 year olds are being left out in policy decisions concerning the economy?

My daughter's in high school, so in a matter of years she'll be in the workforce -- where college graduates are finding it harder and harder to find jobs. Right now, we should be helping young people to build their careers and start families, with a government that's on their side.

Instead, this President is siding just with the very top taxpayers and corporations. That's the Bush formula -- but it's not a formula for sustained growth or for job creation.

I know we need to create the jobs of the future today -- for this generation, and for generations to come. As President, here are five things I'll do to jump-start that process:

  1. Create a new tax credit to reward companies that create jobs in America.

  2. If you start a business, there'll be no taxes on the money you invest. None.

  3. Open markets aggressively. One in five people in this country wouldn't have a job if not for exports. There are thousands more markets around the world for our products.

  4. Expand the Tech Talent bill that I passed as a Senator -- to train scientists and engineers and put us at the cutting edge of new fields.

  5. To get companies creating jobs now, I will put money back in the hands of the middle class -- by repealing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, eliminating corporate welfare, and cutting taxes for 98 percent of taxpayers.
